Wreckers

Described as "The Finest English Opera" and "The Cornish National Opera", Ethyl Smyth's "The Wreckers" will be produced by Duchy Opera on the centenary of its premiere (11.11.1906).

The plot relies upon the collusion of stereotypical Cornish villagers, murderously luring ships onto the rocks. Our parallel youth project will explore primary source material to raise questions about how the Cornish have been portrayed historically and why.

The WreckersThe young people will engage with the intangible history of Cornwall's maritime past through heritage workshops where they will explore relevant film, music and artistic contributions to deepen their understanding and provoke responses. The result will be high calibre short films and music created and performed by the young people. We are involved in the music and evaluation side of this project which is run in conjunction with English Heritage, Sense of Place and CYMAZ.

"I remember my first gig with Cumpas; 12 bands in 12 hours - a baptism of fire!"

"I remember processing in freezing temperature in Perranporth. Hooray we're at the memorial hall! Oh no we're not! All along fore street, round the roundabout, frostbite sets in, but a great memory!"
