Horners
It was put to the test at Trevithick Day and Golowan where several dozen musicians, playing by ear took to the streets and had crowds of enthusiastic dancers swirling about them.
The idea behind the Horners is to build up a whole network of brass, reed and percussion players across Cornwall. This means that different combinations of musicians turn up to play at local events - there are already many players on our database, from Pendeen to Calstock! Everyone learns the same tunes from our book and CD - Hooch!: Cornish Music for Brass and Reeds, so building on a common repertoire. Regular top-up sessions for those already involved and newcomers alike are held at Threemilestone Church Hall. |

This group of brass, reed and percussion players began life as a community project: 'Crowders and Horners!' run by Cumpas in 2003. The musicians were a wonderful assortment of players from across Cornwall working through improvisation, creativity and good humour to produce a stonking great sound!
We took the Celtic music of Cornwall, combined it with the popularity of brass instruments then added some wild percussion. Then threw the whole lot out onto the street for festivals and fairs. This then became the brash and uplifting music of The Horners.
Since then we have played at City of Lights, Lafrowda, St Michaels Mount, Eden, Truro Carnival, Bodmin Riding and the WildWorks show 'The Very Old Man with Enormous Wings'.
